Course Summary:

Managing the change process within public health organizations is important to ensure improved organizational performance. However, the change process poses formidable challenges. Managers are also facing increased pressure to respond to environmental influences and provide the necessary leadership to their organizations in the change process. In fact, managing organizational change has become a key competency for healthcare managers. In this talk, best practices to establish a change-oriented organization with the culture and capacity for change will be emphasized, including the importance of assessing and addressing change readiness.,

Learning Objectives:

• Discuss general concepts and best practices of organizational change in public health.
• Examine the importance of addressing readiness when pursuing organizational change.
• Describe two examples of local organizational change – youth violence prevention through school connectedness and youth suicide prevention.

Guest Speaker:  Jeanelle Sugimoto-Matsuda, DrPH

Assistant Professor with University of Hawai‘i at Department of Psychiatry and Office of Public Health Studies

Speaker Bio:

Jeanelle Sugimoto-Matsuda, DrPH, is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.  Her research interests include mental/behavioral health, suicide prevention, bullying and violence prevention, and health policy and systems.  She also teaches at the Office of Public Health Studies, covering subjects such as health policy, management and leadership, and research methods.  She is the current Chair of the Statewide Prevent Suicide Hawaiʻi Taskforce, and Board Member of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Hawaiʻi Chapter.  Dr. Sugimoto-Matsuda is also Principal Investigator of the Department of Health’s statewide gatekeeper training initiative, and Investigator for the Asian/Pacific Islander Youth Violence Prevention Center.
