Leadership development is active in Hawai'i through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant called Culture of Health. Hawai‘i Public Health Nurses at DOH Nursing Branch have been preparing nurses and along with an interprofessional team for leadership roles in management, policy, and practice to create healthier places to live, learn, work and plan. Culture of Health project is guiding people to honor their own “sense of self” with self-health care and utilizing best practices of wellbeing through a sense of place and integrated culture of community health.

This activity is co-sponsored with the University of Arizona’s College of Nursing CPE Unit for 1.5 contact hours. Guest Speakers: Joan Takamori, RN, BS, MS and Gloria Fernandez, DNP, MSN, PHN
Joan Takamori, RN, BS, MS is the chief of the Hawaii State Department of Health, Public Health Nursing Branch. Her work focuses on supporting individuals, families and communities maintain health where they live, learn, work, and play. Public health nursing focuses on promoting and protecting the health of populations using knowledge from nursing, social, and public health sciences.
Gloria Fernandez, DNP, MSN, PHN is Leeward Nursing Section Supervisor for the Department of Health’s Public Health Nursing Branch. She is the lead coordinator of the branch’s Health Literacy and Emergency Preparedness. Gloria has three degrees in nursing including BSN, MSN, and DNP. Gloria is active in professional services by serving as Vice Chair of Alignment Health and Wellness Committee, as Board member with Academy of Health and Sciences for Waipahu High School, and as Poverty Simulation Coordinator for Wai`anae.
