Pregnancy and Parenting Support for People with Disabilities

Improve your practice by exploring ways to provide accessible care to people with disabilities who are pregnant, parenting, or seeking agency in family planning. Gain perspective for the historical context of healthcare and reproductive issues among people with disabilities. Explore case examples, practice applying principles of supported decision making, and identify ways to reduce barriers that pregnant or parenting people with disabilities often experience when seeking medical care.

Transitioning from Hospital to Home: Supporting Parents in their New Roles

Having a newborn infant often represents a major transition in a person's life. With short hospital stays after the birth of an infant, parents may not be fully prepared to address situations as they arise. Accessible resources and supportive community services can help parents as they transition from hospital to home. This presentation will address common newborn conditions (based on clinical practice), breastfeeding barriers (problem identified and evident by decreasing breastfeeding rates in the US during an infant's first year of life), and postpartum depression (problem identified by the 11.4% native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander rate of postpartum depression from the Health Resources and Services Administration government website).

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will...
  1. Identify newborn conditions in the hospital that may or may not continue to be an issue at home.
  2. Discuss obstacles and potential solutions to ensure successful and sustained breastfeeding.
  3. Describe symptoms of postpartum depression and options for treatment.

Opioid Use Disorder in Pregnancy: Maternal and Child Health Perspectives

This presentation will focus on the role of the Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) Team and the requirements of the law with the Our Care, Our Choice Act (OCOCA).

An Integrative Approach to Treating Eating Disorders

Barriers to Health in Former Incarcerated Populations

Native Hawaiians have the highest incarceration rate of any ethnic group in the state of Hawai'i. This training will provide an overview of the health barriers faced by formerly incarcerated populations, explore the factors contributing to high recidivism rates within the Hawai'i Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, offer strategies for supporting individuals in accessing social services, and discuss ways to eliminate barriers to healthcare.

Perinatal Mental Health Series: Non-Prescribing Providers

This three-module course is designed for non-prescribers working with the maternal population, including therapists, doulas, nurses, midwives, and other health professionals in the state of Arizona.  The course begins with an overview of Maternal Mental Health in Arizona- including recent data on maternal mortality and the challenges our state faces.  Module 1 covers perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, with a focus on recognizing symptoms and screening.  Module 2 is a supplementary module with additional information about how to provide practical support to moms who are struggling- it is not required to complete for the certificate. Module 3 introduces PTSD and trauma-informed care in pregnancy, equipping participants with practical strategies to support clients with compassion and sensitivity. By the end of the course, learners will feel more informed and confident in identifying and responding to maternal mental health needs.
